see related"Girls That Play Video Games Hardcore Are Usually Really Unattractive"
The title is a direct quote of what I've seen a guy say. It was only a few nights ago that I saw this and isn't the first time I've seen something like this said. But, it still annoys me to see something like that said. And I know that I've wrote about girl gamers before but this is more what is said about girl gamers. Now I don't think that all male gamers are like this, but quite a few of them I've seen are, but it doesn't mean all are.
I understand that most people think that gaming is mostly a thing for males and all, but there really is plenty of female gamers and they aren't as rare as I used to think them to be. I have actually come across many female gamers on Xanga. Now when it comes to gaming message boards - where I see things like this said - I don't see many females on the forums talking and I can understand why; many start freaking out or start saying things to scare off the female gamer who they have just found out is on the site. Although that has never stopped me from being active on the forums, but as of yet I haven't had anyone try to scare me off either. They might not know I'm a girl because I don't just up and tell everyone on the forums "Hey!!! I'm A Girl!!!" because why should it matter? We all are on the site for the same reason; we like video games.
But, even though there may not to many girls talking on the forums, I still think it is important to be respectful and not say things like that. "Most girl gamers are ugly," or "Most female gamers are very unattractive" are some things said that are pretty common to see. It's not right, but I've seen stuff like that said quite a lot.
I'm not going to stop going on the forums, but things like this kind of annoy me; some guys will say things like this as if no girls will ever see it. I think that if more female gamers went on to message boards and would say things like "Most male gamers are ugly." Some of these male gamers might not be so happy.
The website I'm talking about is one where you don't see many girls talking on the forums, but the Hardestlevel on Xanga has many females who go to the site and comment and read the new posts on the site - I'm one of them - but, I've seen some of the same comments on the hardestlevel by guys and there is lots of females that go on there. I guess that just shows even sites with lots of female gamers the same thing happens.
As much as this annoys me I know it won't stop. I think the only way it might stop is if more girls start coming out as gamers, but only then we can hope it will change.
What do you think, are most female gamers ugly? Do you think females will ever be accepted as gamers?

I am not sure?
I think it would probably reflect the general populace... most would be considered "plain janes",with some ugly ones and some beautiful ones thrown in...
I never really saw that many actual pictures of girls I played mmos with...
I don't know many girls who do play video games and don't really go on game messaging boards and looked at pictures of them. But I know I am pretty attractive and I play video games. :]
So not all girls are unattractive.
I agree with Lilsweetjew. I'm a hardcore gamer, and I'm attractive. ;D I think there are way too many stereotypes about girls in the gaming world. Although..... I could say the same thing about guys. When I think of a WoW gamer, I think of a fat socially awkward guy.... which is horrible stereotyping on my part, and definitely not true from experience. Maybe we just can't get away from stereotypes, wherever we go.
there is always going to be the so called "stereotypes" of anything in this world; including female gamers. i am a gamer myself and usually get the comments of "i wouldn't think anyone like you would play this" or even to the point where they comment "i didn't think you owned a game system". most of them find themselves acting this way because of my appearance. i've also recieved the comment of "wow, and i thought all female gamers were unattractive basement lovers." i've heard them all. i don't consider myself a hardcore gamer but i do play a lot of video games and i do find a lot of those comments appauling and very old fashioned. i mean, how many people have seen a girl pick up guitar hero or rock band nowadays? almost everyone. female gamers are actually becoming more popular as time passes. so i think eventually females will be accepted as gamers (they already do in some way). you will just always have those few who are stuck in the past. most of the people that one associates female gamers with are the unattractive stereotypes that people have made female gamers to be. i mean look at cartoons now. they play the stereotype very well for female gamers. (usually they are the gothic- i want to eat your heart out and then kill you- people or the typical nerd with "no fashion sense") if these so called people were real gamers, they would have broaden their surroundings and been around seen that the female gamer stereotype has been completely blown to pieces. cause the typical stereotypes and comments wouldn't have been thrown if they were actual true gamers in the first place. cause its all about how you play the game...not how you look...right?
Girls play games--many girls play games, I've seen it firsthand. Also, beauty is more than skin deep, though the "stereotypical" gamer guy refuses to acknowledge/believe so.
As for mainstream acceptance, one can only hope that acceptance of anything non-harmful/offensive becomes the norm.
Pfft, some hardcore guy gamers I've seen aren't Prince Charming, either.
And with that said, it doesn't matter if you're a gamer (hardcore or not), there's ugly people, and attractive ones; it doesn't matter what your hobbies are.
I play on Xbox Live with a fairly well-knit group of individuals - a few friends of my school, the one friend's relatives, and our online friends from Canada and South Carolina. We play together almost every night. There are about a dozen of us in our little clique but three of us are girls - and alright looking girls at that. We're not 500lbs and acne ridden. There are five total girls on my friend list out of maybe 25.
I actually think gamers as a whole are unnattractive - male and female. The males...well, face it, they are typically basement dwellers. My best male friend is rather attractive, but none of his friends are lookers.
I generally try to keep my gender a secret while playing alone online - my gamertag is masculine and only if you click my profile, you find out I'm female. If I talk during a game, players generally think I'm a prepubescent male (which is absolutely hilarious).
I prefer gaming with girls because they are less competitive.
I really hate this stereotype though, but luckily, most of my friends are male and when I meet new males, they think it's pretty cool. Sitting down for a match of Halo is a good way to bond.
I hate being told to make sandwiches.
I've been a female gamer ever since I got an N64 as a surprise birthday present in the nineties. I have as much of a right as they do to play video games.
Rec'd this.
they can't say becuase there a alot of unattractive guy out there too . lol
That was a very sexist statement... but if you're going in *generalizations* I can see why someone might assume this (lot of psychological factors in that - the type of person, male or female who is willing to sit and game for hours on end... vs. being social or whatever, and so what does this indicate?) I could go into more... but I'm too tired (long night ... but I wasn't gaming, lol.) Still... interesting premise... could definitely be explored more.
First of all, I'm a hardcore gamer and I'm fucking gorgeous.
Second of all, can't we just turn that around? That most hardcore gamer guys are ugly pricks with no lives and no chances of getting laid? :]
Does it matter?
Play video games if you like it, who cares if guys think most gamer girls are unattractive, if you're not ugly then you shouldn't care.
...if you are unattractive...then I'm sorry?
o___0
@LilSweetJew - Yeah, I agree.
@Littoface - There does seem to be a lot of sterotypes about girl gamers and it's not right. I think everyone sterotypes once in awhile, but I think the important thing is to realize what your doing and not do it again, but when it comes to gaming some guys just don't seem to care if they sterotype or not.
@sunshinesasha - Your right; it's not about looks, it's about how you play the game.
@theacematt2 - I agree and thanks for recommending my post.
@dantesplayer345 - This is true. Some of the male gamers who say things like this aren't the best looking, but like you said, looks have nothing to do with your hobbies. I just wish more people would realize that.
@tofu_scramble - When I'm on gaming message boards I don't usually tell people I'm a female either. The only way they find out is if they look at my profile. I'm not afraid to get made fun of or anything, but I just figure why should it matter. I'm on there to talk about games just like everyone else. And thanks for recommending my post.
@shadowmace21 - Thank you for recommending my post.
@Passionflwr86 - Thanks for recommending this post.
I'm a gamer (woot Oblivion) and I consider myself to be attractive. I think that it's a ridiculous stereotype.
I agree with BunnyParfait, can't we just turn it around on them? :)
I'm not THAT much of a hardcore gamer, BUT I enjoy whooping tush when I'm good.
Not everyone's definition of "beautiful" and "handsome" is the same.
Plus, some pro-gamers aren't such hot tamales either. :/
I really don't care what guys say. They rag on each other just as much as they rag on us, so the way I see it is either the girls go off in their own little world, or they get over it and get used to the teasing. When I'm on live, I dish just as much as I receive...so then again I guess I'm not really one to judge. Good post.
@ChainGangSoldier619 - Yeah, I agree. I hate girls who use it as a vehicle to meet guys (seriously, what the fuck) or like...an excuse to be slutty, or just for lonely teenage girls to have guys falling over their feet via headsets. It's just...lame.
There is a distinction between girl gamers and girl gamers that are hardcore. Your title is misleading in the sense that you only talk about any girl gamer. Then you just have to get into the discussion about what is and isnt hardcore which you may and may not want to do. The thing is, girls that game and im speaking of girls that own something other than just a wii (no offense), is that they sometimes play different games or dont talk about it as openly or as deeply - and this is not a universal for all girl gamers this is just for some. Very few HARDCORE girl gamers i know play the games that a lot of guys do, and if they do sometimes they arent what the media would define as beautiful. Of course i dont care about that because a lot of guys arent either. I would still date a lot of them. My gf right now is a gamer.
Gaming for a long time has been to a slight extent negatively recieved by girls and thus when none seem to play, most guys will generalize.
I'm not a girl. I'm a guy. But I think the same could be said (in general) of guys who play video games hardcore.
Doesn't make it true. It's just a thing some people say, because they were never taught tact. If they had tact (social intelligence), they wouldn't say things like this.
Also, keep in mind that "attractive" and "unattractive" are very relative terms. Some people thought the old VW Beetle was an attractive car. Others thought it looked horrible. It's the same way with people.
I never met a pretty gamer, not saying they don't exist but I have never met one, then again I've never met a girl at all who was really into gaming.
Most of the dudes who are big henious so I wouldn't take anything they've said to heart
yes i think so. -shrug-
yeah, it's kind'of true though. I'm into gaming. I've stopped for sanity purposes. I played one game for an entire four days without sleeping. I hear these weaklings are dying after two of heart attacks. WTF?
@BunnyParfait - Silly female. We all know it's illegal for women to play video games!
I'm a female gamer! I wrote a blog about this a while ago...but anyway, that statement that guy said is very ignorant. I've grown up around my 2 brothers and spent most of my childhood hanging out with my dad but i still dress like a girl, and compose myself like a regular woman (most of the time) and I don't find myself to be unnattractive. I may not be gorgeous but I am not ugly.
This guy clearly hasn't met this girl I had a hardcore crush on who was addicted to WoW.
But yes, that is definitely a blanket statement. Frankly, the male games I've met are pretty unattractive, with maybe one or two exceptions. So really, they have no room to talk.
Guys who say this are basically saying it as an excuse for their inability to pick up women. They love video games, and they love girls, but since they cannot get girls, they simply say "girl gamers are ugly." Which is fine because it sets the bar low and makes it easier for guys like myself.
